But it was his home life before this that primed him for Joe's manipulations in the first place. Roderick tells Emma at one point that his mom was in politics and his dad was a war hero, and that they'd always been big on public service. It's also highly insinuated in one scene that Roderick was abused as a child when he reacts poorly to unexpected touch.

What all of this meant for Roderick was that by the time he met Joe, he was majoring in political studies at his parent's behest (despite his obvious skill in literature - he won awards for his poetry even), craving some sort of control and connection with the rest of humanity (things he hadn't found as a child), and open to manipulation from a fatherly figure in the shape of one Joe Carroll.

Joe showed him how to find control in the final moments of a person's life, in being responsible for those moments, and young Tim Nelson flourished under his teachings. When Joe was eventually arrested for his many crimes and claimed responsibility for two of Tim's own kills as well, he adopted the name Roderick from Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and began to work in earnest to repay Joe for all that he felt the man had done for him.

Sheriff Tim Nelson (because Roderick is going to be a name he uses very sparingly in the Box, and probably not attached to his face ever, unless he can't avoid it-- at this point, he's not even all that fond of the connections that name has to Joe anyway) might talk and smile like a good old boy from a small town, but he's not slow and he's not stupid by any stretch of the imagination. Quite the opposite, in fact.

He's got a head for organization and planning, as well as for poetry of all things. While Joe was in prison, Roderick was the one to recruit and build his cult following. He found them a house, hid them all away in the housing records, even developed militia support in the form of training and supplies. All of this while he also managed to work his way up to sheriff of Havenport, as well.

For all of his "academic" cleverness (poetry awards and all), Roderick's strongest point is actually people. Roderick knows just how to charm people. How to make them feel important and wanted, how to make them want to do things for him. He comes across as earnest, kind, and in fact, "normal" as Claire tells him at one point in the show.

Part of his strength in this manner come from the fact that he isn't always acting. While his empathy is generally limited to people from the cult, people he sees as family, the most important part of this statement has to be the fact that he is indeed capable of empathy (something little if any of the other cult members manage to exhibit). While Roderick himself isn't all that sure how his feelings work (being unable to reliably tell Joe one way or another if he "cared" for Louise after death, being unwilling to watch as Joe killed another member of the cult despite the fascination he finds with watching the last moments of life slip away from a person, or even more notably, actually being driven to tears and anger when Joe killed an old friend of his outside of the cult) it's painfully clear that there is something other than simply violence resting in his heart.

For some people, anyway. The ones that manage to get close. But then, getting close can be dangerous as well.

Because on the complete other side of the coin, Roderick's social intuitiveness means that he knows all of the best ways to manipulate and wound people emotionally, psychologically. He knows just the right way to make Claire (Joe's ex-wife) come with him instead of running away with Ryan, has all the right words to cut into Emma when she starts trying to weasel control away from him in the cult, even knows exactly how to unnerve and wreck Joe's careful control by stealing away his kid.

And here's the thing. Roderick called that an impulsive move, claimed that it was a character defect, his impulsiveness, and while he's not entirely lying it's not nearly as thoughtless and debilitating as he'd like people to believe either. Roderick's strength lies in his planning, but he's also intuitive enough that he can quickly analyze a surprise situation and come up with the best plan of action from the options he has available to him.

On the other hand sometimes that impulsiveness really is just impulsive down to it's very core. Notably, when he's feeling particularly upset (with Joe mostly) Roderick strikes out randomly at the nearest person in the room, only to turn around literally a second later and apologize and try to help them up. He mostly manages enough control to avoid showing it, but when he can't it becomes painfully obvious how young he actually is emotionally. At least, when childhood wounds are poked and prodded, he is anyway.

Control is a huge thing for Roderick though. Control is the reason he kills, keeping control of a situation helps him keep control of himself. He'd never had any kind of control as a kid, and Joe showed him how to take control. When Joe begins to take that control away from him after he escapes from prison, Roderick starts to down spiral a bit. He starts getting more violent, more paranoid, more hurt by the betrayal of someone that he'd come to depend on so much. Emma didn't have such a good time of things when she tried to steal control away from Roderick either, for that matter. Above all else, Roderick craves control. And he will not react well to anyone trying to take it from him

If he's not in a good position to kill people in order to exert control, however, he can supplement this need by taking on some kind of leadership role, as well as through aggressive sex. It's important to note here, however, that Roderick doesn't actually have to be the aggressor in said sex for it to satisfy him, though he also won't react all that favorably if someone tries to pressure him into anything when he's not feeling it, either. Think the attempted strangling that I mentioned earlier in this section.

One of the most telling moments in the show in regards to Roderick's motivations, however, comes from a quiet, friendly conversation that Roderick has with Joe's ex-wife Claire, when she tells him that he seems "like a normal, functioning person." Roderick gives her a surprisingly bittersweet smile and explains that the cult and the house provide him with a sort of haven where he doesn't have to be afraid to act like himself. He very pointedly labels it at safe, and if you consider the insinuated abuse he endured as a child, this line takes on a particularly strong meaning.

His conversation with Claire reveals a surprisingly strong sense of self-awareness from Roderick. Unlike most if not all of the followers of Joe Carroll (including Joe himself) Roderick is all too aware of the fact that there is something fundamentally wrong with him. This self-awareness of what Roderick calls hi "basic human nature" leads to Roderick's need to exert control, his easy manner with a public face, and the empathy he manages to exhibit for a select few.

Roderick isn't an unkind person, not even a technically immoral person. He simply has his own kindness and his own morals that he follows instead.

Items on your character at canon point: FBI cap and jacket, handgun. That's... that's it. Nothing else.

Abilities:

weapons: knows his way around things that can make you bleed. he'll favor a knife over a gun for kills of a more personal nature, but he can handle a gun just fine as well.

acting: extremely talented at flying under the radar despite his particular psychosis. seems "like a normal, functioning person"... at least until he doesn't.

knowledge of law: he's sheriff back home in Havenport, or at least, he was before he was killed, so he knows his way around law and procedure.

knowledge of other: studied literature in college, has a particular affinity for poetry and has actually won some awards for his own writing when he was younger.

leader: he needed this not only as the leader of the cult while Joe was in prison, but also as sheriff. he's good at giving directions and making decisions, even offering comfort when the situation calls for it.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

+ self-aware: unlike most of Joe's followers (and indeed Joe himself) Roderick is well aware of the fact that there is something wrong with him. in it's own way, this helps him shape a more believable facade for the world to see.

+ charming: said facade is charming. very charming. his mother was in politics, so no doubt he learned quite a lot from her. he knows how best to talk to people, how to smile to make them smile, how to make people feel important and interesting and wholly worth his time.

+ empathy: a strange strength to see on the profile of a serial killer, I know, but he does actually, genuinely, care about certain people. in fact out of everyone in Joe's following, Roderick has been the only one to actually be upset by death in their ranks. the problem is just that his empathy is very select.

+ strategist: Roderick was the one to set up Joe's following while the man was in prison. he recruited, hid them, organized contacts for supplies, etc. he knows how to dig at people's weak points too, what he can manipulate to best serve himself.

- strong need for control: killing is all about control for Roderick, and when he starts losing control in a situation, a lot of the above positive traits of his start to go out the window. he can lash out, grow paranoid, and begin to lose some of his reasoning ability. betrayal will also sting extra hard for him.

- impulsive: in a lot of ways, Roderick is still very much a child. while he's in control, he's fine, but as soon as he gets scared, angry, or emotional, he can start to lash out impulsively. this can lead to him clocking someone across the face only to apologize immediately afterward. or, you know, to kidnap Joe Carroll's kid.

- violent: well I mean. obviously. he's a killer after all. Roderick's particular fondness for violence revolves mostly around claiming or maintaining control. he can sometimes offset this with aggressive sex instead (in which he doesn't even need to be the aggressor) but overall his self control is pretty strong in this matter until people start challenging said control.

- no touchy: while Roderick can and will use sex as a way to offset his need for violence, he is absolutely not okay with touch that he hasn't initiated or expects. in fact he's pulled a gun on and strangled two different people who tried touching him when he wasn't inviting it, one of whom was even his regular sex partner.

- daddy complex: it's highly insinuated in the show that Roderick was abused as a child, and he certainly saw Joe as something of a father figure, which made Joe physically attacking him later an even stronger betrayal than it might have been otherwise. Joe managed to sour a good deal of this, but he'll still instinctively gravitate towards that sort of approval regardless.

Samples
Network/Action Spam Sample: clicky clicky

Prose Log Sample: Finding out about the ephemeral nature of death in this place that the locals unimaginatively called The Box had caused a bit of a conflict for Roderick when he'd first heard. The fact that nobody managed to stay dead should have meant that people wouldn't mind a bit of recreational murder every now and then, or so it stood to reason for Roderick, but then, not many people seemed to agree with him on that little point either if the people's reactions to those boogeyman technicians was any way to judge.

And since folk were apparently unable to behave rationally about a bit of death, it presented Roderick with a bit of a problem. Namely, that anyone he tried his hand at killing might come back a week later and be able to finger him for the deed, which might go a ways to complicating the name he'd been building for Tim Nelson since he got here.

Roderick never had been a fan of his hard work getting unraveled, particularly by his own blood stained hands.

There were ways to get around that little pit fall, of course, but they all took time and planning. And Roderick was beginning to become a bit impatient, without the distraction of managing a house full of unstable killers, or making the ever important decision of coleslaw or potato salad (the lack of respect these people had for a man of the badge was frankly astonishing, you'd think in a place and situation like this they'd all invite a bit of order but no, he was responsible for his own damn coleslaw).

All of this meant that Roderick was tetchy and on edge, and looking for a way to unwind. The smooth edges of his smile were getting a bit tricky to maintain, and he just wants these damn technicians to get a move on and kill someone already, even if that someone is him.

He'd take anything to escape the boredom at this point. And at least feeling the life drain out of himself instead of a stranger would be something new.

comments
